Changing the Experience of Surgery at Davis Hospital and Medical Center

roboticIf you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition that may require surgery, you owe it to yourself to learn about all of your medical options.

The da Vinci Surgical System provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon’s hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

Da Vinci Surgical System

The da Vinci Surgical System is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Your doctor controls the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body.

Though it is often called a “robot,” da Vinci cannot act on its own. Instead, the surgery is performed entirely by your doctor. Together, da Vinci technology allows your doctor to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings. As a result, you may be able to get back to life faster without the usual recovery following major surgery. The da Vinci System has been used successfully worldwide in hundreds of thousands of procedures to date.

For the patient, benefits may include:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Shorter recovery time
  • A faster return to normal daily activities
  • And in many cases, better clinical outcomes

Your Surgery, Your Choice: Hysterectomy, Prostatectomy, Gallbladder

Davis Hospital and Medical Center is one of the fastest growing hospitals in Utah for robotic-assisted procedures. Board certified surgeons perform several procedures with the da Vinci Surgical System, all of which offer significant improvements over their traditional open and laparoscopic counterparts.

da Vinci Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy (the removal of the uterus) is the second most common procedure for women in the United States. Open hysterectomy requires a long abdominal incision, which has to be large enough to accommodate the surgeon’s hand. da Vinci Hysterectomy, however, only requires five tiny incisions; all the necessary surgical instruments (including the camera) can be placed through these incisions, resulting in a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, less scarring, and less pain.

da Vinci Prostatectomy

Prostatectomy (the surgical removal of the prostate) is a common therapy for prostate cancer. However, traditional prostatectomy oftentimes brings about a loss of sexual function and incontinence. With da Vinci Prostatectomy, the surgeon is able to remove cancerous tissues with better precision, while also sparing nerves that are critical to erectile function and urinary continence. With just five to seven small incisions (compared to open surgery’s single 8-10 inch-long incision), it’s no wonder that four out of five radical prostatectomies in the U.S. are performed with the da Vinci Surgical System.

da Vinci Cholecystectomy (Gallbladder)

If you suffer from gallstones, pancreatitis, or gallbladder inflammation, your physician may talk to you about having a cholecystectomy (the surgical removal of the gallbladder). The da Vinci Surgical System offers surgeons a special tool that allows them to perform the surgery through a single incision in the belly button. It’s known as da Vinci Single-SiteTM robotic surgery; the result is a virtually scarless procedure with minimal pain and high patient satisfaction rates. This approach to gallbladder removal is something anyone facing cholecystectomy should know about.

Is da Vinci Right for You?

There are few medical conditions that preclude patients from being da Vinci candidates. These conditions include pregnancy, abnormal blood clotting, and morbid obesity. da Vinci surgery is preferred by many surgeons and patients over traditional open and laparoscopic procedures because of the faster recovery time, smaller incisions, and decreased pain and bleeding.
