Acid reflux – the backward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus – is a painful condition that affects 60 million Americans at least once a month, according to the American College of Gastroenterology. For approximately a quarter of those individuals, heartburn symptoms may occur daily.
But acid reflux isn’t just painful. The condition may lead to chronic heartburn – or “GERD” (gastroesophageal reflux disease) – which can cause severe pain, esophageal scarring and sores, and may increase risk for cancer. If you suffer from acid reflux (or symptoms that are similar to acid reflux), talk to your doctor to learn more about your options. Testing and treatment for acid reflux may be available to you through the GI lab at Davis Hospital and Medical Center.
Colon Cancer Screening
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and the third most common cancer in men and in women.” 51,000 people die from colorectal cancer every year, yet research indicates that at least 6 out of 10 colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented if adults took advantage of basic screening measures, which are already in place. If you are over the age of 50, talk to your physician about screening. Colon cancer screening is available at the GI Lab at Davis Hospital and Medical Center. Schedule a screening by calling 1-866-431-WELL.
