Davis Hospital Brings Latest Hip Replacement Approach to Davis County
Orthopedic surgeons now performing ASI hip replacement at Davis Hospital
Nov. 10, 2011
Thanks to new equipment and technology at Davis Hospital and Medical Center, Davis County residents will not have to travel far from home to take advantage of the latest hip replacement approach designed to minimize patient trauma and shorten recovery time.
Orthopedic surgeons are now performing hip replacement surgeries at Davis Hospital using the minimally invasive “anterior supine intramuscular” (ASI) approach, where the surgeon gains access to the hip joint through a much shorter incision at the front of the hip instead of on the side or back.
“The ASI approach allows us to directly approach the hip by going between the muscles and tendons that surround it rather than cutting through them,” said Matthew Lyman, D.O., orthopedic surgeon on the medical staff at Davis Hospital and Medical Center. “This minimizes muscle and tendon disruption and makes the surgery less traumatic for patients. Patients experience less pain, return to daily activities more quickly and most even walk within a day of surgery.”
To make the ASI minimally invasive hip replacement technique available to the community, Davis Hospital recently purchased and installed a specialized operating table that positions the patient correctly throughout the surgery.
Mike Jensen, CEO of Davis Hospital and Medical Center, said, “Our patients will benefit from this type of hip replacement surgery, and we are pleased to provide it in our community. Bringing in new technology allows us to provide superior medical care and services to improve the quality of life for those we serve.”
