Davis Hospital and Medical Center Emergency Director Receives National Award for Excellence in Leadership

Utah medical community selects one awardee a year for this title

July 27, 2012

Leslie Christiansen, RN, CEN, is the 2012 Nurse Manager of the Year following a nomination from Davis Hospital and Medical Center staff and physicians. This award and title, presented to Christiansen on September 15 at the National Emergency Nurses Association Conference in San Diego, is based on a nurse manager’s accomplishments within the medical department, leadership role and relationship with medical staff, and commitment to patients, the team he or she manages, and the overall work it takes to aid in the productiveness of a hospital.

Christiansen demonstrates a proficiency in leadership in her administrative role as Emergency Department Director and serves as Nurse Manager in the emergency department (ED). As a seasoned nurse, working a total of 20 years at Davis Hospital, nine of which spent in the ED, Christiansen understands how hospitals operate, down to the smallest details. She balances extraordinary patient care with complete consideration of the team she leads. She is actively involved in the everyday responsibilities of the ED – her nursing and emergency nursing skills are practiced daily and kept up-to-date. She also takes on the role of mentor to new or struggling nurses in her department and has created a mentoring program to assist each nurse and encourage her entire staff to work together.

One of Christiansen’s standout accomplishments was her push to make Davis Hospital a certified Stroke Receiving Facility, which is any medical center that has procedures, equipment, and protocol in place to minimize the delay in stroke care. Christiansen dedicated hours of attention and preparation to help her hospital become certified and establish collaboration with University of Utah neurologists. This is a significant step for any hospital, because it allows for a higher level of patient care and demonstrates a constant desire to improve.

“Leslie, along with the staff at Davis Hospital, is the foundation of our hospital. Her commitment to our hospital’s core values ensures the highest standard of care we deliver to our community every day. We are honored to have Leslie as part of our Davis family,” said Mike Jensen, CEO of Davis Hospital and Medical Center.

The Nurse Manager of the Year award is given annually by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). The purpose of ENA is to enhance emergency health care services for the public by fostering educational programs in the discipline of emergency nursing, providing research grants to extend professional development, and educating the general public on emergency-related topics.

Davis Hospital and Medical Center is a physician-owned hospital as defined by 42 U.S.C. § 1395nn(d)(3).
