Topping Out Ceremony Held For Davis Hospital Project

Layton, Utah, August 1, 2008 - On Thursday, August 7 2008 Davis Hospital and Medical Center held a traditional “topping-off” ceremony for the Hospital’s new 3-story tower, a $36 million expansion and renovation project.

The topping-off ceremony marks a major milestone in the construction phase of the project. During the ceremony, participants will sign a steel beam, which will later be raised to the highest point on the tower.

The topping-off ceremony—a tradition in the construction industry—stems from ancient times. The ceremony is carried out when the final beam, to which a flag is ready for installation on the highest point of the structure. The topping-out tradition is an important symbol of teamwork, quality, and luck for the future. Hospital staff, board members, local officials, and members of the construction team attended the ceremony.

Davis Hospital’s tower expansion includes 67 additional beds, a new fourteen-bed Intensive Care Unit, a Women's Surgical Services Unit, and expanded pediatric, medical/surgical and inpatient services. Also included in the project is conversion of all semi-private hospital rooms into private suites. R.J. Griffin Construction Company is the builder of the project. Completion is slated for spring of 2009.
