Davis Hospital’s Specialized Program Offers Support For Those With Cancer

Two from Davis Hospital become certified cancer patient navigators

Oct. 2, 2012

Davis Hospital and Medical Center’s Breast Care Center recently added two new certified cancer patient navigators to their team to offer individualized support, care coordination, and targeted services for patients diagnosed with cancer.

Patient navigators are licensed healthcare professionals, certified by the National Consortium of Breast Care Centers, Inc. (NCBC). Their central role is to work side by side with the patient, her family, and physicians through all phases of treatment, beginning at the time of cancer diagnosis through survivorship or end of life care. Not only are patient navigators trained to be educators and care coordinators, they are also a support system aimed to decrease the fear and anxiety associated with a cancer diagnosis and establish close relationships with the patient and family.

Davis Hospital’s Breast Care Center offers comprehensive breast care treatment. In addition to three certified patient navigators, the Breast Care Center also offers cancer screenings, tests and therapies, which include brachytherapy, digital mammography, genetic testing, high-risk assessments and counseling, and minimally invasive biopsy.

“Our cancer patient navigators wear many different hats in one day,” says Cindy Stewart, Medical Imaging Manager and NCBC patient navigator at Davis Hospital. “They must have the ability to hear what a patient isn’t saying, because sometimes these questions seem embarrassing or frightening. They understand that a patient may need assistance with an unfamiliar treatment plan, and they also understand that sometimes support is what is needed most.”

NCBC is an organization of breast care professionals, breast care centers, providers of services to care providers and corporations that supply equipment and pharmaceuticals to care providers. Members of NCBC are a resource group of individuals willing to assist in their areas of expertise and offer services for breast care professionals and facilities providing breast health care.

Davis Hospital and Medical Center is a physician-owned hospital as defined by 42 U.S.C. § 1395nn(d)(3).
